The 'what if's' should be boxed up with the "should have beens" and "if I had onlys" and tossed into the 'regrets' box with all those subjunctive, passive periphrastics.......nevertheless, nostalgia insulates us from the harsh and sad isolations of loss, caressing our losses with remembrance......as I close the old box, full of tattered photographs, letters and cancelled stamps from distant places.....Today is 'Father's Day'.....the few memories of my birth father are sustained within a cigar box of deteriorating emulsion, falling from smooth paper....as I imagine how things 'would have been' had R.C. Sr. survived the challenged of Life, rather than hopelessly collapsing, still in his early 30's, lit Camel cigarette between his fingers, across a shopping cart, in Texas, while reaching for a bottle of bitters and a bottle of sweet 'Mixer' for his habitual afternoon cocktail(s)........
