EVOLUTION OF TASTES
I began collecting these in the early 70's.....although they were popular with artists and sophisticated collectors in big cities, for the most part....they had been relegated to use as drawer and cabinet "paper"........i have encountered
boxes and tansu's that had woodblock prints pasted into their interiors....my childhood interest in comic books was a natural precursor to this level of interest....i have some pillow books stashed away and many woodblocks that i have not even seen in many years....There is no room to display them, so I keep them in big leather portfolios......i like both the restrained work of artists like Utamaro, done in an earlier, Edo style, and these more flamboyant Meiji prints. ............
